Overview

There is no longer any debate about technology’s capacity to change the world as we know it; in 2019, the key questions are about how governments and individuals can leverage this capacity for the benefit of all. As rapidly evolving technological advancement transforms our everyday lives, it is critical that we take steps to ensure that no one is left behind. In the international community, for example, amidst the recognition that traditional debt financing is becoming unsustainable, there is a groundswell of support for new innovations in sovereign finance. As inequality deepens and instability persists, we need future-focused, sustainable, and responsible solutions that will diminish inequality between and within states.

This roundtable, taking place on 23 September 2019, brings together heads of state, thought leaders, and industry experts for a high-level discussion of an innovative financing model with the capacity to help smaller countries and emerging economies be more resilient and adaptable: investment migration. As an approach, it is both self-evident and revolutionary: nations seeking external financing can avoid or minimize borrowing by selling equity they already possess. This equity can take the form of “shares” of GDP or, alternatively, the right of residence or citizenship in a nation. As countries such as Malta and Antigua and Barbuda have demonstrated to striking effect, well-managed investment migration programs are able to drive liquidity that meets the needs of governments, without adding to the burden of debt that is a natural result of traditional sovereign finance. There has never been a never been a better moment to embrace strategies and approaches that equip individuals and states to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing world. This in-depth roundtable event will give attendees invaluable insight into a financing model that is transforming the interaction between the sovereign state, the individual, and international liquidity flows.
