Methodology

The world’s most comprehensive high-net-worth population dataset for cities

The high-net-worth-individual population data in the World’s Wealthiest Cities Report 2023 covers 97 cities across nine regions worldwide (Africa, Australasia, CIS, East Asia, Europe, the Middle East, North America, South Asia, and Southeast Asia) and includes most of the world’s top wealth hubs.

The data is supplied by wealth intelligence firm, New World Wealth, which is currently the only known independent wealth research firm systematically tracking global wealth migration trends between countries and between cities. The firm tracks the movements and spending habits of over 150,000 high-net-worth individuals in their in-house database (with a special emphasis on individuals with over USD 10 million in investable assets). New World Wealth’s database is focused on high-net-worth individuals with the work titles: Founder, Chairperson, CEO, and Director. The firm relies primarily on this database when assessing the city wealth breakdowns featured in this report. The data also takes into account public prime property statistics (property registers and property sales). Specifically, it considers the number of highly priced homes in each area.

City definitions

We take into account the normal city limits of all the cities mentioned in this report, with the exception of the cities and areas listed below.

Geneva	Refers to the Canton of Geneva
Los Angeles	Includes the city of Los Angeles, as well as Beverly Hills, and Malibu
Miami	Miami includes Miami (city) and Miami Beach (island)
Paris	Includes the city of Paris and Hauts-de-Seine
The Bay Area	Includes the city of San Francisco and Silicon Valley
West Palm Beach	Includes West Palm Beach (city) and Palm Beach (island)
Zurich	Refers to the Canton of Zurich

Wealth definitions

Wealth	For our purposes ‘wealth’ refers to ‘investable wealth’, which includes property, cash, and listed company holdings
Millionaires or high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs)	Individuals with wealth of USD 1 million or more
Centi-millionaires	Individuals with wealth of USD 100 million or more
Billionaires	Individuals with wealth of USD 1 billion or more
